Genomic Prediciton of Stroke and TIA

Questions regarding collecting data for a multi-center case control study of genetic predictors of stroke. Issues of chart abstraction, data recording/entering and transmital post-collection to central site were posed and addressed.

Consultant Advice:

1) Develop a detailed chart abstraction form using Word.

2) Have consultant review the form during development.

3) Once the form is complete, develop an Access "front end" data collection system based on the form. This will ultimately be used for transcription of the data from the paper forms into a computer database.

4) Chart abstraction using the paper forms can start prior to development of the Access data collection system.

5) Data will be transcribed off the paper forms into the computer database.

6) Create export routines and formatting procedures necessary for transmital of data to central site.

Although we recommend collecting the data first on paper and then transribing into an Access database, we also discussed the advantages of initially collecting the data using an on-screen, browser-based form. This is available anywhere with an internet connection. Data can be validated on entry, and the transcription step is eliminated. Should you decide to move to such a data collection system, we can help you build it.
