Case Study Provided Lauren is a 2nd year clinical research fellow working with a prominent medical scientist whose research team includes 12 trainees at various points in their studies. Lauren is considered a promising investigator who has contributed importantly to several of the groups' publications and who will be moving to a good academic job at the end of the year. Lauren has worked closely with Clement, a 3rd year graduate student who shares many of her research and professional interests.

When the local newspaper publishes a story and critical editorial on the reported misconduct of a well-known researcher from another university in the state, Lauren and Clement identify a number of errors in the reporter’s discussion of the basic medical questions involved in the case. Together they draft a letter to the editor of the newspaper pointing out the problems with the original story and disagreeing with the conclusions of the editorial. However, their advisor is very critical of the letter and their desire to respond to the newspaper article. "Everything that is sent out of this lab for publication has to have my approval," says the PI, "and I don't approve of this at all. You have no business getting us involved in this mess. It would only come back to haunt us."
