Description of Success A pilot study designed in collaboration between Georgetown and Howard Universities to collect survey, laboratory, clinical, and anthropometric data on a sample of Arab Americans living in the DC metropolitan region. Study participants were seen at the Clinial Research unit (CRUs) at Georgetown University and Howard University. Additionally, community events, open house events and site visits by the travel nurse to enroll Arab Americans were conducted. The examination consisted of a health survey including questions on demographics, country of origin, prevalence of chronic diseases, access to health care, stress, locus of control, smoking, chronic diseases and demographics; a physical examination to measure blood pressure, height, weight and waist circumference measurements; blood sample collection to measure fasting glucose and lipids (HDL, LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides); and a urine sample collection to measure albumin and creatinine. The primary aims of this study are to determine the prevalence of various health conditions of the sample, and to compare prevalence of diseases to national estimates using data from nationally-representative surveys, such as the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The study lead to a campaign of awareness in the community, couple of publications, abstracts, new collaborations and currently a submission for a larger follow-up study of CVD risk factors in Arab Americans.
