Web-based Interactive System for Study Design, Optimization and Management (WISDOM)

WISDOM [for Web-based Interactive system for Study Design, Optimization, and Management] aims at providing investigators with integrated design, compliance, and biostatistics support during all stages of research”[6]*, from power calculations to data sharing, by acting as a ‘knowledge broker’ between various independent software packages, including Oracle® (data base management), REDCap (the REsearch Data Capturing project coordinated by the Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, Nashville), μStat (a grid environment and program packages developed by Tingting Song with support from RU IT under Dr. Wittkowski’s direction, providing Web access to resources for novel nonparametric statistical analyses of multivariate data), S+® (general purpose statistics), iRIS™ (clinical research study management).

In January, 2007, a group of consultants from Insightful Corporation was hired to evaluate the existing WISDOM prototype, attest to the feasibility of the planned developments, and write an implementation plan. In their May 1, 2007 report, the consultants summarized and concluded:

  • “The initial programming in WISDOM was done by Claudia Peissert in early 2005, under Dr. Wittkowski’s direction.” Using a rapid prototyping tool (ScopeLand), “Ms. Peissert was able to produce a prototype with the […] functionality [to interacting to other software through] a DOC interface to MS-Word […], an SQL interface to Oracle […], a JAVA interface to browsers […] so that investigators or study coordinators could copy and past data from their spreadsheets into the central data base […] from any computer [, providing] enhanced safety and security. [and] an XML-interface […] to clinicaltrials.gov”. In October 2005, “Ms. Peissert moved on to work on the development of iRIS.”[10]
  • Developing WISDOM “is feasible and will provide significant benefits to investigators within and outside The Rockefeller University [offering] the potential to become an integral component of The Rockefeller University’s clinical investigation solution for: study definition, study data management and statistical analysis, and as a support tool for investigators.
