Case Study Provided |
Belinda Bishara, is a graduate student, who has been part of a large laboratory's efforts over the past five years to identify the gene that causes cystic fibrosis. She is one of ten graduate students, technicians, and postdoctoral fellows who have worked closely together on this project, doing a large number of interrelated experiments. In writing a report on her research, she has included, with permission and citation, some unpublished data from other members of the laboratory so that the context of the experiments she performed would be clear. See the "Other" box for questions and discussion. |

Questions for Discussion 1. Are Bishara's actions ethical? Why or why not? Since she received permission from her co-workers to use their unpublished data and since she cited the work, this is ethical behavior. To refer to the work of others without citing published data or without permission and citation to unpublished data is inappropriate. |
