Case Study Provided A Graduate student in molecular biology has just completed a gel blot (a standard methodology in molecular biology designed to isolate specific DNA sequences in a DNA sample, which results in a visual representation of the existence/absence of the specific sequences via bands generated by X-ray imaging, see ‘original image’ below). To her great satisfaction, the desired sequence was well-represented in lane 2. However, there was also a lighter band discovered in band 3, which she interpreted as irrelevant to her research project. As a result, she used Photoshop to eliminate the band in lane 3 (see ‘manipulated image’). Her advisor was thrilled to see the final results of the blot (i.e., the manipulated image).
