Case Study Provided |
A PhD? candidate and former school teacher is doing research on the sexual practice attitudes of high school teachers. The protocols involve the interviewing of active teachers regarding their attitudes and feeling regarding students, lust, etc. The topic is “hot” in the geographic area and will bring considerable exposure to the University. The IRB has decided this is a full review. They have made recommendations including: 1] PI cannot be familiar with the teachers, 2] interviews cannot be recorded,3] consent must be reworded, and 4] interviews should be conducted anonymously separated by a curtain. The IRB indicates they will consider the PI responses in 6 months. The IRB indicates these changes are recommended to “protect the subjects from harm”. The PI realizes this will delay the study and data collection by nearly a year at this pace, and challenges the “protection from harm”, and this is an interview with consented subjects; many studies include subjects known to the PI; and there are no legal issues for this study. |
